Dan Dean - Solo Woodwinds/AKAI
of sound castle
... family size package chip, box beer, telephone and entry door clip clamped, woman and children on the country skillfully (thanks Dan!). Thus in approximately the preparations for the test listening program for Dan Deans "solo Woodwinds" ran. The AKAI format with 9 CDs was appropriate for me in black zipper bag (black more zipper wallet) forwards. Thus available 10 CD set for Gigasampler (in each case 549 $) and a Gigasampler Lite version for 199$.
With more sympathetic 24 bits Stereo quality was taken up. All instruments offer a very high volume range (high dynamics) and Timbrebereich (tone quality range = timbral rank). For technology-interested it is mentioned that a Apogee A/d-8000 transducer was used, which points also by means of its Uv-22 of process responsible for the reduction to 16 bits.
The instrument spectrum ever reads itself like a class meeting orchestral blown woods: Old flute (Alto floods), bass clarinet (bass Clarinet), bass flute (bass floods), bassoon (Bassoon), clarinet (Clarinet), deep or retort bassoon (versus Bassoon), old oboe (English horn), flute (flood), oboe (oboe) and Pikkolofloete (Piccolo) Dan thanks!
The product brochure (Booklet) offers clearly arranged information to the organizations (partitions), defaults (Presets), descriptions (Description), layers (Layers) and size of (Size).
Up to CD number 9 (oboe: A-f = 6) are in each case 9 partitions (A-i) at board. In the following I call the MT size per CD and clarify that per CD one instrument each is not to be found. That is also the reason why it only in the Gigasamplerformat also individually available CDs gives.
1. 470.3 MT - Flute (C4 to C7)
2. 473.7 MT - Old flute (G3 to E6) and bass flute (C3 to F5)
3. 478.0 MT - Bass flute and Pikkolofloete (D5 to C8)
4. 467.4 MT - Pikkolofloete and clarinet (D3 to F6)
5. 466.6 MT - Clarinet, bass clarinet (Db2 to Bb4) and bassoon (Bb1 to Db6)
6. 476.9 MT - Bassoon and retort bassoon (Bb1 to Db2)
7. 477.8 MT - Retort bassoon and old oboe (E3 to A5)
8. 479.7 MT - Old oboe and oboe (Bb3 to D6)
9. 330.9 MT - Oboe
The defaults and descriptions are almost identical per CD. The following play ways can be demanded from the woodwind instruments and this are also clearly audible: Portato (the clay/tone binding), Vibrato (easily trembling clay/tone), Non Vibrato, Stakkato (clearly set off clay/tone) in the modes of Pianissimo (very quiet), piano, Mezzopiano, Mezzoforte, Forte to Fortissimo (very loud). As absolute minimum three dynamic stages (old flute) are available, otherwise 4 to 5 dynamic stages per instrument.
Yes, there is single tones and only single tones, which were packed on the CDs. Up to 6 the notice stages (velocities by note) per single tone make all humans, who want lucky to work with the material correctly.
All CDs offers up to three layers, so that for professional tone quality organization and individual sound organization the very best conditions are to be found. The three-situation partition of each instrument is present both in Stakkato and Portato. By woodwind instruments it is to be owed to the naturalness that the note duration and Expressivitaet with the volume range go congruently. These natural characteristics are set very beautifully on this compilation in scene.
In practice this means: A quiet notice on the MIDI Keyboard plays a quiet sound with according to characteristic tone quality. A louder notice plays SAM-polarizes with higher volume and suitably changed tone quality!
The instruments
Flute, old flute, bass flute and Pikkolofloete:
To all four flutes on the CD package it applies that they are played with and without Vibrato. The pitch dispersion of all instruments is clarified above in the table. To mark it remains that it no Fortespielweise in Staccato and Portato for the alto -, bass and piccolo give. The entire SAM polarizing material is more extensive for the flute compared with the three sisters. Therefore wish yourself I the same measure of expression possibility also for the three other flutes.
Clarinet and bass clarinet:
For the clarinet parliamentary group Non vibratolegato, Staccato and Portato were planned -/Mezzostaccato as main categories. Whom it surprises that Vibrato contents are missing its said that it might be a true rare piece with clarinets Vibrato to play. Fantastically also the character of the clarinets played here appears to me.
Bassoon and retort bassoon:
The play way is alike to the clarinets. They are only specially stated, in order to certify them exzellente sound characteristics. As also is the case for all other instruments, problem-free transitions and mixtures of most diverse character characteristics can be played.
Oboe and old oboe:
Here are four play ways: Non vibrato and Vibratoklang are exactly the same as Staccato and Portato/Mezzostaccato photographs. In the sound of the oboes a completely special sound potential lies for me. Oboes, those in Vibrato ring out are simply potent! It probably requires no mention that the entire tonumfang is present chromatically.
Result:
From the instrument spectrum to test purposes no more extensive LIBRARY was submitted to me. Klanglich seen are to be compared the "solo Woodwinds photographs" with those by Miroslav Vitous. Although this substantially older date are and fewer SAM polarizing materials offer possess they a delightful charm, which is not also missing the Collection of Dan Dean. Who shrinks from the purchase of the CDs because of the price, version can fall back also to a Light. The Moeglickeit individual instruments to buy exists, but only in the Gigasamplerformat.

"Dan, I have just completed a project where I was able to use most of your solo woodwinds. With this addition to my sample library, my tracks aresounding more live and authentic than ever before. Producers are impressed because they think I actually hired "Live" players! Wow, I love this stuff! Can't wait for the "solo horns". Bring 'em on . . . quick!!"
